THIS IS IT. THIS IS THE BOOK. Potentially Book of the Year for me, but I guess we’ll see when book 2 (A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire) drops, September 1st (update: I’ve read A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, review to come, but oh my, JUST AS GOOD)… It’s time to pick up this book today. Don’t sleep on this babes.
The first 50% is fairly slow, and honestly, you might not appreciate it until you re-read the book. The second half is a stay up until 3am read from that point on! This book is perfect for fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses series – and it’s me, I’m one of those fans.
Poppy is the heroine of the story. She’s the Maiden, which quite frankly, both Poppy and us, as the readers, have no clue what this means. But we do know she lives an isolated life so she remains pure to be “given to the gods” at her Ascension (also what does this mean?), and reminiscent of the Tainted Accord series, she wears a veil (and knows how to fight!).
We meet Poppy’s love interest, Hawke Flynn, very early in the book. He’s new in town, moving quickly up the ranks of the guard. Poppy first meets him when she sneaks out to a saloon, and soon thereafter, he’s assigned to be one of her personal guards. *Fingers crossed* he doesn’t recognize her…
Poppy has her own secrets that she’s trying to hide from Hawke and everyone else really, but their relationship still grows, and the secrets slowly come to light. If I had to describe Hawke, it would be the perfect amount of cheeky rather than crass, and ugh, I love him. ~swoon~
Overall, this book has great world building and sets the scene nicely for the series to continue. There’s a lot of action, fighting, secrets, and yes, steamy ~romance~ scenes.
We’re kept in the dark for most of the book and find out what everything means in this world along with Poppy in the latter half of the book. It’s almost annoying how this is done because I just wanted to know, but at the end, I was like, wow, that was amazing, well done, wouldn’t change a thing.
There are definitely a lot of hints along the way, and I was able to guess most things but that CLIFFHANGER omg. *fanning myself* because I need that to happen to me.
