One Moment Please has it all. And I’m not exaggerating. I was smiling, laughing, and yes, even crying. This book has a lot of story line and will tug at your heart strings as you peel back the layers that are Dr. Dick.
Lynsey Jones has been loitering in the hospital cafeteria for the last 3 months, writing her master’s thesis. Lynsey’s enjoying her daily slice of pie, when the grumpy doctor from the cafeteria sits down at her table to confront her. Despite their altercation which involves said French silk pie, Lynsey finishes her thesis. Nice work, Lynsey!
Fast forward to that evening, Lynsey is out celebrating with her friend, Dean (he’s kind of a man-whore), ironically drinking a Birds & Bees. Is this even a real drink?? Confirmed, it is.
Dean’s a freelance investor, and in walks his biggest client. Oh, and this guy’s friend just happens to be Dr. Dick. I mean, Dr. Josh Richardson. Honestly, I feel like he can’t even be mad with the nickname Dr. Dick because his name is actually Dr. Richardson; it’s a natural nickname.
There’s a lot of… bickering at the bar… I wouldn’t call it foreplay. Lynsey calls herself an Uber, and Dr. Dick follows her out of the bar. He decides to share it with her, and they end up at his house. I’d give the steamy scenes a B minus. They’re a bit fade to black and remain fairly comical.
Okay, so I actually didn’t like the beginning of this book that much. It was on track to be a 2 star read, because I couldn’t stand Lynsey’s internal monologue at first or her strange, ludicrous outbursts. I found the banter super childish; the conversation at the bar would never happen in real life.
The irony and foreshadowing in this book are full force. At the bar, she rambles on about her love for children and being lucky enough to hold random babies at airports. She literally says, “The thought of running into that hot asshole at the cafeteria after the night we just shared would be more awkward than him being my actual doctor.” Does she hope to manifest these things into reality?
After a freak accident on a Tinder date, Lynsey winds up in the ER. Helloooo, Dr. Dick. The conversation, that follows Josh reading her chart, realizing she’s pregnant, and addressing it, is hilarious and definitely more realistic than their interaction at the bar. Dr. Dick is pretty anti-kids, and it seems like there is more to that story. In order for Lynsey and Dr. Dick to have their HEA, they’re gonna have to unpack that at some point…
Did I think some parts were cheesy? 100%. Did I get annoyed at some of the childish behavior? Yes. But overall, I was pleased with the direction the book took. I wouldn’t say this was a light read; there were a lot of themes related to past trauma surrounding sickness and death. It was still a funny, easy read following the surprise pregnancy trope. Because what better way is there to bring two unsuspecting people together than SURPRISE, a baby!
