I’m actually thrilled to be writing a review on this book! I’m 99% sure I haven’t mentioned Kelly St. Clare’s Vampire Tower series yet on the blog, but I certainly will be including it in my best vampire book list coming soon. All this information to say, because I loved that series, Kelly’s new Werewolf Dens series has a similar premise, so of course, I love it too.
Also, it seems like I’m on a werewolf kick lately, which really isn’t my favorite, but when some of my favorite authors write werewolf series, I READ WEREWOLF SERIES!
Anyways, let’s jump into this book review.
Shifter Wars Book Review
Andie’s mom has just passed away from cancer, leaving her left with $410,000 in debt, a total surprise as her mom had quietly started back up her gambling addiction at the end of her life. With her house up for sale to pay the debt, Andie also discovers that her mom actually has a different surname and place of birth.
This information in hand, Andie decides to go find out more about where her mom is really from – Deception Valley. Andie discovers she has an entire family there – including a cousin that could be her twin. When trying to go to their house to meet them, she stumbles into their weekly “laser tag” game, which is the entire plot of the book.
It’s not normal laser tag. They’re shooting tranquilizing darts, setting traps, and sometimes taking it even further. This is all so there’s “peace” in Deception Valley. They are competing for five industries of business in the town which decides who can operate each industry. It’s her family, the Thanas, versus the Luthers, the wolf pack. (It takes a little time for Andie to realize the wolf part.)
Since Andie basically has zero money, she doesn’t plan on staying long. Her uncle almost creepily wants her to stay, providing her with an apartment in town. He’s not the only one that wants her to stay. Andie meets Alarick/Sascha, the owner of The Dens, when she gets caught busking on the street outside the bar. He offers her a job playing at his bar, and casually lets her know she doesn’t have to work on Wednesday’s because…. They play laser tag against another family in town.
But all you need to know is that when a sigma sees something he wants, he takes it.

So at first, I thought the laser tag plot was silly and a little immature. Not as interesting as the real estate game played in the vampire series I mentioned above. However, it grew on me, probably because it adds to the forbidden romance, and causes problem for the mating call that’s happening between Andie and Sascha. It’s a shifter romance… Of course they’re mates! And I love the tension that’s building between them as they go through their “meets.”
The book really starts getting good as Andie learns more about her family, how the game works, and the Luthers. But the game’s not over yet. I ended this book being ready for the next. And I can say I’m 100% Team Luther, even if Andie isn’t there yet. There’s a big cliffhanger. Luckily, at this point, the whole trilogy is already out (and I’ve already read it!)! And I can guarantee you’re not going to want to miss this.
