As you may have guessed from the title, this post is about my full guest bath remodel for under $15k! This year, I’m really focusing on updating my home, and I’m sharing all the details (links included).
My downstairs bath, which is also my guest bath, was mostly original from the late 1970s. I called the shower the “seashell shower” because of the large seashell shelves built into the walls, which also rendered the bathtub nearly useless. The cabinets were original and in rough shape. The countertop had been replaced with green granite, which I actually liked. The round toilet was also original – which shocked my plumber at one point. Needless-to-say, it was time for some updates.
Mood Boards
I started with a mood board so I could get a feel for my style and also just have somewhere to collect all the options in one place.

My first pass at the mood board.

Final mood board, but I still made some changes after this!
As you can see from my mood boards, I wanted a classic style bathroom. I love basketweave marble, so I always knew that would be the flooring. I loved the idea of the vanity being a “piece of furniture” and knew I wanted it to be all wood. For finishes, I thought I wanted Chrome – to be boring and classic, but I fell in love with Polished Nickel. Close enough, but better in my opinion! A nice, deep tub and an elongated toilet round out the plumbing!
I also added some ideas for paint color, shower tiles, faucets, and mirrors. I’ll get into the final details below!
Before Photos
Are you ready to see the seashell shower?! Here are the before photos of my guest bathroom (featuring paint swatches).

I forgot to mention the outdated light fixture and popcorn ceiling! Also, as you can see, the bathroom was already green from the previous owner, and I still wanted green, but not that green. The paint on the left was Taiga by Sherwin Williams, which ended up coming off extremely gray. The right is Succulent by Sherwin Williams and what I ultimately chose! See the Afters below 🙂
The Grand Reveal – After Photos
Here’s the outcome of my remodel – I love it and am so happy with the results! A friend even said she would like to come live in my bathroom, which sounds like a glowing review to me.

I love how the vanity, mirror, and light fixture combo turned out. We moved the light fixture down from the ceiling – also did you notice the popcorn is gone?!

The toilet is now elongated, and the Kohler option is super sleek and classic. The before vanity was actually 60 inches; I chose a 48 inch vanity to give the furniture appearance and also give more space around the toilet. I think it makes the bathroom feel larger. The new vanity is also a lot taller than the original.

I opted for a shower rod (tension, not mounted) and curtain. I’m not a fan of glass for shower/tub combos. I also went with a ceramic tile with a carrara marble pattern to match the floor, but not deal with the hassle of marble in a shower (and save money!).

I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on the shower niche mosaic – which honestly, thank my mom! She helped me pick it out via Facetime while I was at Floor & Decor. It’s a glass and marble mosaic! I love the Polished Nickel Shower kit I got. I think it looks very classic. I also went with a grab bar for safety (and yes, maybe my mom!).

I wasn’t sure how I felt about not having a handheld shower, so I ended up ordering this vintage looking kit from Kingston Brass on Wayfair. The kit included the shower head, hose, diverter, and a mounted holder. I opted to order a suction-cup shower head holder from Amazon instead, because I didn’t want to create excess holes in the tile. Also, I’ll note that you can find a similar handheld shower head for much less, but unfortunately, I wanted the Polished Nickel to match, which was only available for more expensive prices.

I love the marble countertop and backsplash. And the 8-inch faucet spread looks so luxe. I also went with a standalone toilet paper holder, which I think is super cute and doesn’t ruin my beautiful new vanity.

For a finishing touch, I added this Loloi rug. It looks a little blurry in this photo, but it’s very nice and muted in person. It pulls on the green walls nicely and warms up the room without overtaking the marble floors.
