My Thoughts on Off the Grid
If you’re looking for an F1 romance book, this is an F1 romance book. I’m not saying it’s amazing, but it was a 2.5-star, interesting enough read for me to finish.
Basically, Spencer and Camilla meet at a bar during a mean dare from Spencer’s friends. Spencer is an asshole to her, but they still kiss. Spencer is a driver, hoping to make it into the F1 circuit. When he finally gets the call to join the Moretti group, he’s thrilled. Until he walks in on day one and finds Cami. She’s the owner’s daughter.
Cami’s been living in Italy, working with her family’s other business, avoiding the racing circuit at all costs – and for a reason. But her dad’s health is declining, and she knows she has to go back. She’s back at the Moretti group working under her dad to revamp the marketing department and learn the ropes to take over one day. And she’s not thrilled with her dad’s newest driver.
I didn’t find Spencer charming at all. I found him annoying – his teasing wasn’t cute to me. But as the book went on, I liked him a little more, especially when he was focused on racing and a real-ish relationship with Cami. The man was willing to give up everything to protect Cami, so at the end of the day, I liked that part. But he was still super cocky, in all aspects of life – from his driving to his social media to women in general.
I liked Cami and her family. I liked how she brought in new ideas for the marketing team and was genuinely excited about it. It was interesting watching her try to gain respect in a male-dominated industry.
It’s not surprising that Cami experienced some type of SA in her past. The book hints a lot with her clothing choices and how she’s changed. Her hesitance and even fear to go back and be around racing again suggests that there’s a connection. I feel like it wasn’t addressed the best in the book – the details were just thrown in, and her way to “heal” her “brokenness” was using Spencer to chase orgasms. Also, I found it surprising that no one in her life caught on to any of her changes and asked if something was wrong – felt like she was kind of failed in that way.
Overall, this wasn’t the best love story or romance book. Spencer had a lot of flaws and really lacked awareness and empathy as a person. Cami was easy to root for, and I just wanted her to find true healing and happiness again – I don’t think Spencer was necessarily the right person for that as his character was written. If you’re looking for a F1 romance book, you might like this, but I think you’ll have to look past a lot of uncomfortably written situations.
