I love when my friends call or text me and ask for book recommendations. Just yesterday, my long-distance bff called me saying she’d been in a book slump and asked what she could read that would help her get out of it.
Now, it’s not a what, it’s a who. Elizabeth O’Roark has been at the top of my auto-read list for probably the last 2 years. She deserves a special shoutout, so today, I’m doing an author spotlight on this genius woman and her books that I’ve read.
And a huge plus – if you’re new to her writing, you’re in luck, because she has quite a few books in her backlog for you to read.
I’m most familiar with her “The Devils” series – I’ve also seen it written as “The Grumpy Devils” series… and yes, I’ve happily read all of them that are out so far. In general, her heroines are hilarious, the books are fairly light reads, the banter is witty, and the men are hot and yes, delightfully grumpy.
With that being said, I’ll go into a little more detail on each of these books – quick synopsis, my ratings, thoughts, etc!
A Deal with the Devil (Book 1 – The Devils Series)
Genre: Enemies-to-lovers, workplace romance
Pages: 300
Release Date: August 10, 2021
Tali begrudgingly decides to help out her best friend, who’s going away for 6 weeks to adopt a baby abroad, by filling in for him at his job as a personal assistant to a plastic surgeon. The money is good, and she needs it. Hayes is a playboy (so many one-night stands.. he’s a busy one) plastic surgeon that really just makes house calls to give botox to the rich and famous in LA and never takes a day off.
It’s a slow-burn book with lots of banter and bickering between the two. To top it off, this book is hilarious. I was smiling and actually laughing out loud throughout it.
The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (Book 2 – The Devils Series)
Then do me a favor: please don’t spend the entire trip fawning over your brother’s girlfriend.
Sloane, Josh’s ex, who is on ALSO on the trip
Genre: Enemies-to-lovers, forbidden love
Pages: 316
Release Date: January 20, 2022
In Book 1, we met Tali’s new friend, Drew Wilson, who’s a famous singer. Immediately, we can tell she’s going to be interested, and I was looking forward to her story. And we get it!
Drew has a toxic ex-boyfriend, Joel “Six” Bailey, who is also in a band. He invites her on his family’s vacation to Hawaii, and she decides to go. Why not give it a second-chance? But Joshua, Six’s older, doctor brother is also on the trip, and he hates Drew. But maybe Josh being there isn’t such a bad thing after all… could he actually be the one for Drew?
It’s a second-chance romance turned enemies-to-lover with the brother. Spicy. I love the Bailey family; we get a lot of character development for everyone. Drew and Josh have great chemistry as they slowly get to know and trust one another. Such a cute read – and this one just feels like it should be read on vacation!
The Devil You Know (Book 3 – The Devil Series)
Genre: Enemies-to-lovers, workplace romance
Pages: 296
Release Date: June 23, 2022
Wait a damn second. Omg. I missed this one. I don’t know how, but I am immediately putting this on my TBR. Apologies my friends! Going to put in the official blurb!
Official Blurb:
There’s a devil on my shoulder, and every Monday morning she announces herself. She’s this delicious flame in my chest, a flurry of whispered suggestions in my ear. Suggestions I ignore…because every single one of them is about Ben Tate.
Ben—Stealer of Clients, Evicter of Homeless Women, Nemesis. Sitting across from me every damn Monday with his lovely, smug smile and his too-perfect teeth, the living symbol of everything I hate.
It’s been my policy to avoid him, but when a case comes into the firm—one that could change his career and mine—I make an exception. It means weekends and evenings by his side. It means enduring his smirk and his smart mouth and never taking the bait.
Until the night Ben says, “Beg.”
And that devil on my shoulder decides to make a few demands of her own.
The Devil Gets His Due (Book 4 – The Devil Series)
Genre: Enemies-to-lovers, accidental marriage, surprise pregnancy
Pages: 337
Release Date: December 1, 2022
Okay, so this actually makes a lot of sense, why I didn’t remember the lawyer/brother Ben that gets mentioned in this book… since I accidentally missed book 3. But oh well.
I remember meeting Keeley in one of the earlier books; she’s a bit of a party girl but also a workaholic doctor with a love for designer things. Drunkenly marrying Graham Tate was not in her plan and accidentally getting pregnant was definitely not in her plan. Graham lives in New York, while Keeley lives in LA. And when he finds out about the pregnancy, he goes to LA to be around for her and the baby. Graham is hot, rich, and surprisingly frugal… but can he and Keeley actually get along?
This book was chaotic – mainly thanks to Keeley, but it had some endearing moments and people in it. It’s opposites attract, enemies-to-lovers, accidental marriage, and surprise pregnancy. So, it’s a lot, but I found it enjoyable!
Final Thoughts
That’s it for that series and the books I’ve already read from Elizabeth O’Roark!
I’ve got her new book, The Summer We Fell, queued up on my kindle which I’m excited to read. It sounds like enemies-to-lovers and second-chance with flashbacks. I’m also hoping to go back and read her series, Parallel, which is supposed to be some sort of time-travel love story!? Ugh, can’t wait.
Let me know if you’ve read Elizabeth O’Roark’s books or are planning on it now – in the comments or over on Instagram! If you liked this author spotlight, I’d love for you to share this post!
