They came to earth—Pestilence, War, Famine, Death—four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all.
Ana da Silva always assumed she’d die young, she just never expected it to be at the hands of Famine, the haunting immortal who once spared her life so many years ago. But if the horseman remembers her at all, he must not care, for when she comes face to face with him for the second time in her life, she’s stabbed and left for dead.
Only, she doesn’t quite die.
If there’s one thing Famine is good at, it’s cruelty. And how these blighted bastards deserve it. Try as he might, he can’t forget what they once did to him. But when Ana, a ghost from his past, corners him and promises pain for what he so recently did to her, she and her empty threats captivate him, and he decides to keep her around.
In spite of themselves, Ana and Famine are drawn to each other. But at the end of the day, the two are enemies. Nothing changes that. Not one kind act, not two. And definitely not a few steamy nights. But enemies or reluctant lovers, if they don’t stop themselves soon, heaven will.
Famine Book Review
“You really should’ve stayed away. You may still be the same little flower who saved me, but then, I’m not known for letting flowers grow…”
If you’ve read Laura Thalassa books before, you know they’re dark and gruesome. The Four Horsemen series is no exception! Famine is the third book in this series, and sadly, it fell a little flat for me. If you’ve read the first 2 books, then the plot is literally just the same, and it’s getting a little boring. But do I still recommend this series? Yes. Would I recommend this for strictly romance readers? Probably not.
Famine strolls into town with his men to hold court, always taking over the most opulent house, and expecting gifts and offerings from the humans. Not that he really cares for such things, because he’s just going to kill everyone anyways.
Ana, our heroine, has been working as a prostitute since the fateful night she saved Famine’s life (sort of… he’s immortal anyways). She’s brought to Famine by her Madame as a gift. He’s not interested in her at all and surprisingly to Ana, doesn’t remember her at all either. So she’s off to be killed by Famine’s men, because that’s what he does.
This book is gruesome, and Ana is stabbed many times in the chest and then left for dead in the backyard in a pile of other dead bodies. Perhaps with a little divine intervention, Ana survives this attack and swears revenge on Famine.
Ana finds her way to the next city Famine has taken over to decimate. She sneaks into the house he’s at, prepared to slit his throat. And classic – she can’t do it. More classic – he wants to keep her now.
I almost forgot to mention all the things that Famine can do with his special Horsemen power. He can essentially control the life and death of plants, so he uses his life power to grow plants that suffocate everyone in the towns he rides through. Then, he uses his death power to kill all the crops just in case he missed some people. Oh, and he can control the weather to a degree.
Final Thoughts
This book really follows the same story line as the first 2 in the series, so like I mentioned, I’m just getting a bit bored of it. Horsemen is evil. Horsemen decides he wants to keep human, but is still mildly abusive to said human. Horsemen is definitely cruel and evil to all other humans. Human wants to show that all humans are not evil and do not deserve to die. Human doesn’t want to love Horsemen but does anyway. Minor setbacks and conflicts arise.
This book is not steamy. It’s not a classic enemies-to-lovers romance read at all. The main characters are both damaged in their own ways from the traumas they’ve experienced.
If you’ve read the first two books, go ahead and read this! If you haven’t, go read Pestilence (Book 1) first – I think you’ll enjoy it more!
P.S. This less-than-stellar review didn’t stop me from reading the 4th and final Four Horsemen book, Death…
