Rejected – My Review and Thoughts
Ever since Mera’s father challenged the alpha of their wolf shifter pack and lost; she’s been tormented by her pack. In particular, the alpha’s son, Torin, has been especially brutal to her. With her first shift coming up in a month, Mera takes the opportunity to make a run for it. Unfortunately, she doesn’t last long on the run before she’s hunted down by Torin and his friends and brought back.
After Mera’s first shift, it’s revealed that her true mate is none other than Torin. Immediately, Mera and her wolf are hopeful. But that initial hope quickly fades as Torin rejects her. Distraught, Mera somehow reaches out to the shadow world. This summons the Shadow Beast, their creator and god… and maybe the devil himself?
Shadow, as Mera calls him, takes her back with him to his world. He has shadows surrounding him and shifts between heights – typically staying in his 8 feet tall form. Wow, okay. Honestly, the world is kind of hard to understand that she’s taken to. To me, it sounds like it’s mostly a giant library, Shadow’s quarters, and then a hallway of doors that leads to other worlds. Oh, and there’s the mysterious shadow world door that won’t open.
You find out pretty quickly that Shadow wants Mera to connect to the shadow world again and also help gather up all the shadow creatures she released in the process. But there are a lot of unanswered questions. We don’t know why he wants her to do this, and we really don’t know anything about him. But we start to get pieces along the way.
Also, Shadow has a group of friends from different realms, and I’m hoping we learn more about them in the next book – potential spin-offs?
Mera provides funny commentary – a classic of Jaymin Eve’s work. Naming Shadow’s shadow “friend” Inky, making a friend in Angel the badass woman in the cafeteria, a virginity bet, it all adds a little fun and personality to the story.
Overall, we are set up for the next book… not a lot of steamy moments in Rejected, but I’m excited to see what happens with Mera and Shadow!
p.s. Book 2, Reclaimed, drops January 12th!
